Tesla’s dropped their new Model X & 3 into both the physical world and the gaming world at the same time late last week.
Video Game Marketing
The purple rapped Tesla Model’s arrived in China CBD via create with two PUBG themed characters attending it in full gear. The total of Six X's & Y's are now in display in 3 seperate Motor Show Rooms around China. Chinese fans loved the delivery while the remainder of the world is to questioned the theme "game of peace" words inscribed on the vehicles. PUBG is known as a first person shooter game and often referred to as the serious version of fortnight but China actually renamed it as "Game of Peace". When you shot players they don't die but puff into smoke, waving as they leave. China has told international media they when you'r playing it is as a "training Exercise" like Paintball with real cars and once you get shot you cant get up...
Now, Back to the good part. You can play PubG Now and actually drive the car within the game (also know Brandification). Fans in China will be able to actually drive the Model X & Y in coming weeks.
Elon Musk, The The CEO of Tesla has been vocal about getting into China for production of his new cars. This also happens to be where Tencent, the world’s largest video game creators, are based. Elon is famous for saying "I doesn’t spend any money on marketing”. I think he can do that because of how eccentric he is. In the past 2 years he has;
- Shot a Car into Space
- Created the worlds largest battery
- Created and sold over 20,000 flame Thrower's
With stunts like these he more like the real life Ironman and therefore doesn’t need to pay for advertisement, as he’s a walking advertisement in and of himself. So whats he most recent advertising stunt? A Partnership’s with Tencent to incorporate his car into PubG, one of the most played video games in the world with over 400,000,000 Players according to variety.
Video Game Audience
Photo Credit: Tesla China. Elon is a master advertiser. He like I knows that the average ‘gamer’ age is 32 with a 55/45% male/female split. Those who play PubG are 90/10 male/female split with average age being 36. Whats the average age, race and gender of a Tesla buyer? You Guest it; 38, USA, Male. Thats within an 7% mark - thats a closer 'target audience' than you aim for on both Google and Facebook ads.
A large part of his target audience will be driving his car in a video-game they love, with the average player playing over 1.6 hours a day. If thats not positive brand association & recognition I don’t know what is. Marketing in essence is 'the ability to get in front of your customer and keep their attention' - Gary V. With video-games being one of the only things left in the world that hold's our attention I think Elon has made a master move which is going to bring them and Tesla a large return.
I'm sure Tencent is also happy with this deal as-well, after all - its going to be brining a lot of attention to their game which is also their target audience. Some Tesla lovers are going to hear about this game for the first time and want to play it.
The Future of Game Advertising
The car industry moved from steam - to - fuel but Elon was the first to predict the world would move from fuel -to- electric. The world has gone Radio to TV. Then TV -to- Online (Social Media/Google). I believe Elon can see that our advertisings final destination is video-games.

I think we're going to see a lot more partnerships like Tencent & Tesla in the short future. It's where the worlds going. Our attention is no longer on TV since we had smart phones. I'm convinced the only industry that has 100% engagement is the video game industry & those that utilise it game like elements will come out a lot better off in the coming years.
